Tuntable Community Centre was fitted with an approved commercial kitchen in 2010 and has functioned as an important venue for many events since. It is accessible from the public road, close to the community Hall and has a large parking area. The kitchen provides UV filtered water, a large electric oven, storage pantry, sufficient large pots, cutlery and crockery to serve over 150 people and several big fridges and freezers for community use. The kitchen is used for catering during major events at the Hall and is also used regularly for meetings, social events, funerals, fundraising, workdays, workshops, a small food co-op, and mail service for residents. It has also functioned as an invaluable community space during disasters.

2019 – Nov-Dec Bushfire response co-ordinated from the carpark area. Catering for major New Year’s Eve fundraising event raised $24,000 for Nimbin Rural Fire Service

2020 – Food co-op established in pantry to enable residents to access basic food supplies during Covid

2022 – March-April – The sole public road to the community was cut off by several major landslides for 3 weeks. During this time, generators were sourced from residents to power the building and kitchen infrastructure. Fuel for these generators needed to be carried overland while the road was blocked.

Meals for the whole community were served daily during this period. Meals utilised existing supplies from the food co-op established during Covid as well as donated supplies ferried in overland and later during breaks in the LCC landslip roadworks on Tuntable Falls road. Residents could not access bank funds and cash was in short supply so these meals were free. Starlink hardware loaned by a resident enabled community members to access telecommunications which were not available while the Telstra network and the Mt Nardi tower were out of order.

The Co-op now has its own Starlink connection as well as a CB radio located at the community Centre and 2 other hubs in the valley. Both of these essential communication services require power to operate. The CC now also houses a stock of bedding, tents, showers and personal hygiene items for use in any future emergency.
